An Embarrassing Position

An Embarrassing Position, based on a sketch by Kate Chopin, takes place in New Orleans in the 1890s. Willis Parkham is a young bachelor running for political office. Late one night after a so-called “political meeting,” Eva Delvigné, the lovely and naïve daughter of a family friend, unexpectedly announces herself. Before Mr. Parkham can figure out what to do, there is another knock at the door, but this time it’s—gasp!—June Jinkins, the gossip columnist for the New Orleans Times-Democrat!

Winner, National Opera Association Chamber Opera Competition, 2013

“One of the most utterly charming pieces I’ve seen this year.”

—Theodore P. Mahne, New Orleans Times-Picayune, December 23, 2013

“. . .Funny and vibrant. . .It’s a thoroughly enjoyable parlor comedy with smart direction by Danielle Edinburgh. Hogan, DeMartin and Ryan sang beautifully, and Shore’s clever lyrics left many in the audience singing after the show.”

Will Coviello, Gambit, August 9, 2013

“Audiences might expect that Gershwin, no matter how rare, would be difficult to top. But Shore’s An Embarrassing Position did just that. An utterly charming little comedy, Shore’s one-act opera does something that few contemporary classical pieces do – it sends the audience out humming the tunes!  Shore, a Pennsylvania-born composer and playwright, now on the faculty of Xavier University, shows a remarkable felicity for melodic phrasing in a work that is distinctly of the time it depicts, while never falling into mere pastiche. It is a modern work that acknowledges its origins and influences, most notably in its structure, with multiple vocal lines reminiscent of Donizetti, and musical humor of Rossini. Add a splash of Gilbert and Sullivan patter and you’re sure to have audiences smiling.”

Theodore P. Mahne, New Orleans Times-Picayune, July 26, 2013

“What an unexpected delight to find that a modern composer can produce a string of ravishing melodies! . . .The music is enchanting, with one memorable song after another.  . . .The audience did something unheard of after a performance of a contemporary composer—they went out humming the tunes.”

—Christina Vella, The St. Bernard Voice, November 12, 2010
